Because 5-Year-Old Olympians Aren't a Thing (Yet)
What is the Fun-tathlon all About?
The Fun-tathlon is all about giving kids the chance to explore a wide variety of sports in a fun, low-pressure environment. Designed to promote play, growth, and community, it lets children discover what they love while keeping schedules simple with after-school sessions—leaving valuable family time intact. No pressure, just pure fun and exploration.
The Secret Sauce
Variety: Why settle for one sport when you can taste-test them all?
Fun: We put the 'play' back in 'playing sports'
Skills: Sneaky learning disguised as good times
Flexibility: Because your 5-year-old's career as a pro athlete can wait
Funtathlon Training Camp’s Mission:
To ignite a lifelong love of movement in young people, focusing on the potential within every child to find their own path in athletics and beyond.

COACH SERGIO
Sergio Hernandez was born and raised in Fresno, CA. From a young age he loved sports and his favorite day of the year as a child was Playday, where he competed against all his elementary school classmates in various sports events and games. His love for competition never wavered throughout his life as he went on to graduate from Westmont College with a BA degree in Economics and Business. Some of his highlights during his time there was winning intramural championships in basketball and table tennis. Throughout college he coached at various elementary schools with the Montecito Basketball Academy. Later he worked with the Santa Barbara Breakers basketball team as the director of community engagement and operations.
Sergio earned his masters degree from Pepperdine University and for the last decade has dedicated his time organizing a mentoring and tutoring program for elementary students in the eastside Santa Barbara. In his free time he enjoys traveling to new countries (he has visited over 30+), visiting new restaurants, and playing a competitive game of basketball or tennis with friends.

COACH JOSH
Josh Collins is the dorky dad behind Fun-tathlon, a program he created to bring joy and spontaneity back to youth sports. Growing up in a sports-loving family, Josh thrived on the excitement and intensity of organized sports. While in college, where he competed in the Decathlon, he came up with the idea for Fun-tathlon during a summer break. What started as a small idea turned into a quirky, decathlon-inspired event featuring random challenges like monster golf, a backwards 100-meter dash, a 2nd-grade timed math test, javelin, an obstacle course, and more. The first-ever event, still a YouTube highlight, became a hit.
Josh created the Fun-tathlon Training Camp, admittedly for somewhat selfish reasons—to delay the slippery slope of youth sports commitments and preserve family time with his boys and his wife, Lucy. In addition to his passion project, Josh is the Co-Founder of the nonprofit Endowment for Potential, where the mission is to power human potential. He also helps entrepreneurs launch their own businesses and supports companies developing new products through Pivot Speed Studio. When he’s not planning the next big event, you might find him enjoying a game of Kubb, brainstorming creative home storage solutions, or bringing Fun-tathlon to life with his kids.

COACH SASSIN
Sassin Nahas is a dynamic third-year student at Westmont College, majoring in political science. His passion for youth development stems from his own experiences in enriching after-school programs and camps during his childhood. Sassin brings a unique perspective to the Funtathlon team, having worked in occupational therapy throughout high school. This experience honed his ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds and support them in achieving their developmental goals.
As a Funtathlon coach, Sassin combines his academic insights with his practical experience in youth support. He is driven by the opportunity to create the same sense of community and belonging that was so impactful in his own upbringing. Sassin's approach emphasizes compassion, dedicated support, and the belief that every child has the potential to grow and thrive in a nurturing environment.
When he's not studying or coaching, Sassin enjoys exploring the beautiful Santa Barbara outdoors and engaging in campus activities that further his interest in political science and community engagement. His enthusiasm for learning and helping others makes him a valuable addition to the Funtathlon team, where he continues to inspire and guide young participants on their journey of discovery and personal growth.
